If there’s one thing that summer makes me think of, it’s 7-11 slushies. As a young girl, whenever the weather got hot my mom would take me out for a cup of that iconic, neon ice. I would mix the flavors into sugary incoherence: coca-cola and blueberry, lemonade and sour cherry, lime and grape. While as an adult I’ll crave that summer treat from time to time, the few times I’ve actually indulged I’ve been severely disappointed. It’s far sweeter than I remembered it to be, and never icy enough. As someone who tries to be conscious about her intake of sugar and chemicals, I set out to make my own version.
While the color of my homemade slushie isn’t nearly as attractive as 7-11’s, the taste and consistency are far superior. Next time I might add frozen cherries or strawberries instead of pineapple, to give it a prettier coloring.
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups frozen watermelon
1/2 cup pineapple, or any other frozen fruit of your choice
1/4 of a lemon, juiced
1 tsp raw honey
1 tsp moringa powder
enough orange juice or water to allow it to blend smoothly
This recipe makes enough for two. Blend and enjoy!
