What is Inflammation?
Inflammation is usually a sign of a healthy immune system; it is the body’s natural response to quickly repair an injury or fight off potential health threats. However, in the United States, the prevalence of inflammation can be linked to a diet high in refined sugars and starches, leading to chronic inflammatory diseases and health conditions such as asthma and rheumatoid arthritis.
Inflammation and Moringa
Inflammation is also linked to the number of oxidants in the body. When the body has too many oxidants, it can cause inflammation. Antioxidants essentially help balance the level of oxidants in the body by reducing inflammation and preventing cell damage. Recent studies have shown that Moringa oleifera’s potent antioxidant properties could play a role in its ability to reduce inflammation and treat diseases associated with chronic inflammation. Research has also suggested that moringa could lessen the effects of asthma, arthritis, allergic reactions and colitis.
Moringa oleifera’s leaves are also rich in phytochemicals called glucosinolates, which are enzymatically converted to isothiocyanates, compounds commonly found in green vegetables. Isothiocyanates are known to have anti-inflammatory and detoxification properties.
More research is needed to fully understand the anti-inflammatory benefits of moringa; however, these studies suggest that moringa could be an excellent addition to an anti-inflammatory diet.
Moringa Can Complement Your Anti-Inflammatory Diet
The popular Anti-Inflammatory Diet is not a true diet in the traditional dieting sense, and it is not intended for weight-loss. It is, however, very similar to a Mediterranean diet of fresh, whole ingredients.
